Waipori and the First World War

As the terrible conflict of the First World War gripped New Zealand, not even remote mining settlements such as Waipori escaped its impact.  Many young men from the diggings enlisted in the army, and six did not return.

They are commemorated on the Lawrence war memorial and in far-flung parts of the globe, and their stories are told on this page of our website.

  1. I am a volonteer who has helped to maintain this website for nearly 20 years now.

I have just “found” the Waipori war memorial of Wilf Knight and noted that it is not in the register. It probably should be even though Wilf was not resident in NZ and served with Australian forces.

Can you help me with more information please. The photo on the Waipori Gold website is fine if someone can authorise its use.

    1. Hello Bruce

Thanks very much for getting in touch and offering to add the Wilf Knight memorial to the memorials register. You’re welcome to use our photo.
